Transtracheal Aspiration (TTA) in Patient with Chronic Bronchitis and Broncheictasis

Abstract

|
Using the simple technique of transtracheal aspiration (TTA) in patients with chronic bronchitis and bronchiectasis, bacteria were found in 16 transtracheal aspirates from 14 patients. From six aspirates no bacteria were isolated. In 13 aspirates the isolated bacterium grew in pure culture. Anaerobic bacteria were isolated in pure culture from 3 aspirates. No complications were encountered. This preliminary report indicates that the bacterial flora in this condition is more complicated than hitherto appreciated.
